Spring 2017 Honors Convocation and Academic Fair Celebrates Students'
Academic Achievements

Students' academic accomplishments were recognized May 5 during 51Âþ»ios College's annual Spring Honors Convocation, held in the Convocation Center inside the Jane P. Batten Student Center.

The event recognized more than 70 students for their outstanding contributions to VWC's academic community. President Scott D. Miller, Provost and Vice President Timothy O'Rourke and Chaplain Gregory West were joined by VWC faculty, staff and members of the community, who presented the awards.

Individual departmental award recipients were acknowledged along with undergraduate research participants and members of the Class of 2017.

The Wesleyan Singers, led by Director of Choral Music Bryson Mortensen, brought the event to a close with a singing of the College's alma mater. An Honors Convocation reception and the 12th Annual Academic Fair followed immediately in Hofheimer Library.

Internship with NATO-ACT   Inspirational for First VWC Intern

Irene Bargueno's love of languages and cultures was heightened during her internship with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization-Allied Command Transformation (NATO-ACT) this past fall. Bargueno, from Madrid, Spain, served as the project leader for NATO's Cross Cultural Competence initiative which focused on understanding other cultures and seeing the many differences between them.

Bargueno's decision to attend college in America was influenced by 51Âþ»ios's partnership with NATO-ACT which was formally established in 2013. "My dad was a NATO officer and had a position at the base in Norfolk, so I took the opportunity to live the American college experience at 51Âþ»ios."

Bargueno credits her inspiring experience during the NATO-ACT internship and VWC professors for having a profound and positive influence on her. Experiences such as Bargueno's internship program are supported by gifts to The Excellence Fund. They provide students the support to explore areas such as undergraduate research, student life, and study-away opportunities that prepare them for the next step in their lives and careers.
