From Chrysler to Curator
By Laurissa Senecal '16

During her fall internship at the Chrysler Museum of Art, 51Âþ»ios history major Stephanie Deach '17 had what might be called a well-decorated workspace. A large percentage of her time was spent looking through the Chrysler's expansive storage rooms, all while trying not to bump into various masterpieces as she worked as a museum curator coordinating a new exhibit.

The Chrysler Museum gave Deach what at first felt like a daunting task. She was instructed to work alongside the Brock Curator of American Art Dr. Crawford Alexander Mann III to put together an exhibit of about 50 photographs taken by 20th-century Norfolk photographer Harry C. Mann (1866-1926). She learned about different aspects of photography, studied Mann's pictures with a magnifying glass noting advertisements and faces in the background, made dozens of wall texts describing each photo, and became an expert on Mann's life through hours of individual research. The Harry Cowles Mann exhibition opened April 16 in the Willoughby-Baylor House in Norfolk's Ghent neighborhood.

Deach says she is overwhelmingly grateful to 51Âþ»ios for the internship experience she had at the Chrysler Museum. Support of The Excellence Fund helps create opportunities like these for VWC students, preparing them for the next step in their lives and careers.
